Tonganoxie resident Mel Taylor might be 90 years old, but he is still productive in his custom woodworking shop, Taylor Made! Mel actively takes custom orders and creates beautiful wood pieces (both functional and decorative) in his shop in Tonganoxie while mentoring three apprentices. He is the 2012-2013 Senior Arts Craftsman of the State of Kansas, and Tonganoxie is proud that Mel makes his home here.

Mel has a very colorful resume that includes teaching carpentry for the Quartermaster Corps, fulfilling specific, unique requests for government entities, teaching wood technology at Shawnee Mission West High School for over 30 years, and creating custom belt buckles and earrings for his line dancing friends when he and his wife Dorothy traveled the national championship circuit.

Mel buys various types of wood directly from local saw mills, and he displays his work at Vintage Park in Tonganoxie. He even makes pens out of deer antlers when someone is kind enough to donate one or two.
